Skills or Industry? The Dilemma of Today’s Tech Generation

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about my career direction. It feels like the job world is putting more and more pressure on us to be something specific. Whether that’s becoming a specialist in a particular skill — like a front-end engineer, data analyst, or UI designer or becoming an expert in a certain industry, like fintech, healthtech, or edtech.

But honestly, at this point, I’m kind of confused. Should I focus on sharpening my skills as much as possible? Or should I start focusing on one industry and build deep understanding there?

Skill Specialization: Master It, But Sometimes It Feels Too Generic

From the start of college or learning, we’re often told to first master technical skills. Coding, design, copywriting, marketing, analyticsall essential tools to get your foot in the door. I followed that path too: learning Kotlin, React, building portfolios, joining projects, and so on.

But over time, I began to feel:
“Anyone can learn these skills. How do I stand out?”

Skills are important, no doubt. But I also realized that skills without context can lose their direction. For example, you might be asked to build a healthcare app, but if you don’t understand the healthcare industry, you won’t know how to create a product that truly benefits patients or doctors.

Industry Specialization: Focused, But Risky If You Choose the Wrong One

I once worked on a project in the edtech industry. Through that, I learned a lot about curriculum design, teachers’ challenges, and even education policy. At that moment, I thought,

“Wow, understanding the industry really does matter. We’re not just building features we actually know why those features are needed.”

But here’s the problem…
I’m still unsure which industry I really want to commit to. What if I choose fintech, and the industry suddenly crashes? What if I go deep into edtech, but eventually burn out from the education space?

That fear of choosing the wrong path is real. Once you’ve built a reputation and network in one industry, making a switch isn’t easy. Especially when your work experience starts to feel too niche.

Between Flexibility and Focus

I tried comparing skill specialization and industry specialization.

I’m Taking the Middle Path (At Least for Now)

After a lot of thinking, reading, and chatting with some friends, I came to one realization:

“Why choose just one, when I can build strong skills while exploring different industries?”

So for now, I’ve decided to keep sharpening my technical skills while dipping my toes into different industries through projects. I’m not in a rush to brand myself as “the fintech person” or “the edtech guy.” Instead, I’m slowly figuring out:

• Which industry excites me the most?

• What kind of problems do i actually feel called to solve?

• What kind of people or stakeholders do i want to help?

Because in the end, passion doesn’t always show up at the beginning sometimes, it grows along the way.

I’m still figuring things out. Still learning. Still searching.
But I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. If you’re also torn between becoming a skill specialist or an industry expert, that’s okay. We’re all figuring it out. Just don’t stop learning. Don’t be afraid to take the wrong turn. And most importantly, keep moving.

Because skills can be built. Industries can be explored. What matters is that you keep a sense of direction and don’t stay stuck.
